Microsoft & Apple step down from OpenAI board

Microsoft and Apple have reportedly stepped back from their observer roles on OpenAI’s board 🤷 

Microsoft, which has invested over $10 billion in OpenAI since 2023, no longer sees the observer role as necessary due to significant progress made by OpenAI 🤖 

Meanwhile, Apple Fellow Phil Schiller, who was initially set to join the board, will now have regular meetings with OpenAI as part of an AI partnership 🤝 

These decisions come as antitrust efforts against big tech have stepped up in recent months, with regulators in the U.S. and internationally accusing tech giants of wielding monopoly power.

Bumble’s big step towards AI safety 🛡️ 

Bumble, the dating app, has introduced a new feature that allows users to report profiles suspected of using AI-generated photos and videos 🤖 

When a user wants to report a profile, they can choose “Fake profile” and then select the option "Using AI-generated photos or videos". Users can also provide additional details if they wish 💭 

The dating app also added that it is committed to improving its technology to ensure a safe and trusted dating environment ❤️‍🩹 

Samsung’s new smart ring 💍 

Samsung has announced its first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring, which is set to launch on July 24, 2024, for $399 📆 

The Galaxy Ring is expected to offer health and fitness tracking features in a ring form factor. It provides “24/7 health monitoring” and starts with the most passive of all health tracking: sleep 💤 

Samsung said the Galaxy Ring will pull together metrics from sleep, activity, sleeping heart rate, and sleeping heart rate variability and provide insights about overall health ❤️‍🩹 

Interestingly, all these features are available without a paid subscription ✅ 

Vimeo’s tactic to distinguish real vs. AI content 🤖 

Vimeo has joined YouTube, TikTok, and Meta in implementing a way for creators to label AI-generated content 🤖 

The video hosting service announced that creators must now disclose to viewers when realistic content is created with AI. This is a big move from Vimeo as it has become very challenging to distinguish between real and fake content created by advancing generative AI tools ✅
