EXCITING AI NEWS

OpenAI to seek more funding 🤑

OpenAI is reportedly in early discussions to raise a fresh round of funding at a valuation at or above $100 billion. The terms, valuation, and timing of the funding round have not yet been finalized and could still change 📈

If the funding round happens as planned, it would make OpenAI one of the world’s most valuable startups. The company is set to complete a separate tender offer in early January, which would allow employees to sell their shares at a valuation of $86 billion 💵

OpenAI has also held discussions to raise funding for a new chip venture with Abu Dhabi-based G42. The startup has discussed raising between $8 billion and $10 billion from G42. It’s unclear whether the chips venture and wider company funding efforts are related 🤔

Apple silently releases its LLM 🤖

Apple has recently unveiled an open-source multimodal large language model called Ferret. Ferret is a new machine learning model that can use regions of images for queries ⌨️

Researchers working for Apple and from Cornell University quietly pushed an open-source multimodal LLM in October, a research release called “Ferret” that can use regions of images for queries. The introduction in October to Github largely flew under the radar, with no announcement or fanfare for its introduction 📰

The release is important to researchers, as it shows Apple is keen to be more open with its AI work, rather than its usual secretive stance. Ferret’s release to open-source is being performed under a non-commercial license, so it cannot be commercialized in its current state. However, there’s always a possibility for it to become used in a future Apple product or service in some way 📈

Copilot debuts on the Android store 🛍️

Microsoft has launched a standalone version of its Copilot AI chatbot for Android. The app is available on the Google Play Store and is developed by Microsoft Corporation 🪟

It features Microsoft’s AI chatbot powered by GPT-4 and provides chatbot capabilities, with image generation through DALL-E, and the ability to draft text for documents and emails ✉️

This is a significant step in making AI technology more accessible to users across different platforms 🙍

New York Times vs OpenAI 🥊

The New York Times (NYT) is suing OpenAI and Microsoft. The American daily alleges that OpenAI and Microsoft used their copyrighted material ©️

The lawsuit claims that “millions” of articles published by the New York Times were used without its permission to make ChatGPT smarter, and claims the tool is now competing with the newspaper as a trustworthy information source 🗞️

The New York Times is fearing that ChatGPT is kind of becoming its rival, by generating text which answers questions based on the original reporting by the newspaper’s staff. If the Times goes ahead with the lawsuit, it will mark a high-profile legal battle over copyright protection in the age of generative AI 😳

Alibaba’s new 3D-AI tool 🤖

Alibaba has recently unveiled a new tool called Make-A-Character (aka Mach). This tool uses large language and vision foundation models to generate detailed and lifelike 3D avatars from simple text descriptions, or natural language 🧬

The researchers said that its current version focuses on generating visually appealing 3D avatars of Asian ethnicity, as its selected SD model is primarily trained on Asian facial images. They look to expand support for different ethnicities and styles in the coming months 📈
